Throughout the last few years, amazing strides have been made in an effort to preserve Earth. With help from media attention and political support, people are beginning to realize the damage that has been done to our planet over time. There have been many campaigns and major efforts to bring nations together and clean up the environment. After all, this Earth is all we have. It is our legacy.
Nickelodeon has made great efforts in improving the lives of children all over the world. They have implemented an event called the world wide day of play (WWDOP). On September 14, 2011, in addition to WWDOP anchored in Washington, D.C., there were more than 4,000 confirmed local WWDOP events that took place across the U.S. and also in countries throughout the world including Germany, France, India, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden and Tanzania. WWDOP began in 2004 as a part of Nickelodeon’s The Big Help initiative, a kid-led movement for positive change that focuses on four key issues: the environment, education, health and wellness, and community service. Through The Big Help health and wellness component, kids are encouraged to be more active for healthier lifestyles.
Another popular act of preserving nature was celebrated internationally in 1990. Earth day occurs on April 22 of every year. It is a day when anybody and everybody comes together to work on nature-friendly projects such as conserving energy and planting trees. Earth day broadens the base of support for environmental programs, rekindles public commitment and builds community activism around the world through a broad range of events and activities. It is the largest civic event in the world, celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a billion people participate in this campaign every year.
All over the world there is a frantic wave of enlightenment about things we can do to help preserve nature. All someone has to do is type "environment" into a search engine and they will receive thousands of websites and articles and blogs about steps they can take to be more conservative. Everything from unplugging electrical devices when not in use to planting a tree in your front yard can have monumental effects on the world when everyone participates. If the green movement continues to grow and excel the way that it has been in the past decade, the Earth is in for a seriously healthy, much-needed make over.
